Young Women on the Move

In Kansas and Missouri, more than 7,600 girls in grades 7-12 drop out of school. Of Kansas City’s families in poverty, 62.5% are female-headed, single parent households. We want to show these girls the path to a better life.

Young Women on the Move teaches middle school and high school girls the attitudes, behaviors, and skills necessary to lead a healthy life in every aspect. Its name symbolizes girls moving toward the future with healthy minds, bodies, and spirits focused on life’s amazing possibilities.

REACHING MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT

Young Women on the Move provides an active environment that gives each young woman a voice in designing a program that meets her individual needs as well as the opportunity to have fun and to meet community leaders. Our program is organized to promote healthy development in mind, body and spirit.

After School Program

During the school year, trained social workers and volunteers provide counseling and lead the Young Women on the Move curriculum in weekly one-hour sessions at the high schools and in three-hour, after-school sessions at our offices on Wednesdays for both middle school and high school groups.

Workshops

Throughout the year, various workshops and mini-lectures are held. For example, our multi-week Job Success Workshop introduces girls 16 years and older to business professionals who teach the critical skills and attitudes necessary for workplace success.

Summer Enrichment

Every summer, a themed enrichment camp assists girls in minimizing summer academic loss while enhancing growth in a variety of areas. Sessions that train the girls to make healthy and wise choices are interspersed with fun activities like crafts or visiting a watermark.

Culinary Academy

Our newest program utilizes our community garden and partnerships with local chef organizations to teach girls and their families about healthy cooking and nutrition while providing entrepreneurial opportunities.
